During the low vision evaluation, your vision will be tested in order to develop a treatment plan to recommend new glasses, assistive devices and daily living aids which will help you with everyday activities. Vision rehabilitation with an occupational therapist may also be incorporated to train you in the use of these new tools.
The evaluation is completed by Dr. John Metzger, who is an optometrist specially trained in low vision rehabilitation and neuro-optometry. The evaluation is not invasive, however it is a very unique and extensive examination process. Depending on the complexity of your vision condition, the evaluation may last two hours.
The first hour of an exam is spent with Dr. Metzger. He will identify the need for a new prescription and level of magnification. For some patients, a second part of the appointment is spent with our specially trained occupational therapist who will train you in the use of new prescriptions and devices and help you decide what works best for your goals and abilities.
It may be beneficial for you to schedule a second visit to ensure the greatest success with new prescriptions and devices. The follow up visit is typically covered by Medicare or insurance.

| Few people are totally without sight. Most individuals today classified as "blind" actually have remaining sight and, thanks to developments in the field of low vision rehabilitation, can be helped to make good use of it, improving their quality of life. |
