Developmental Vision : Primitive Reflexes

An infant's developmental milestones are marked by primitive reflexes, which are reflex actions that occur in response to certain stimuli. Primitive reflexes are important for babies to be able to adjust after nine months of being supported in the womb.

Primitive reflexes do not usually persist (with the exception of the parachute reflex, where one automatically stretches the hands when placed in a forward/falling position). When they do persist it can be a signal of delays in the neurological system.

When a patient begins a program of vision therapy in our office, we test for and remediate primitive reflexes.
