When conventional spectacles can no longer help, it's time to consider low vision aids. These come in a wide array of strengths and designs. They range from simple hand-held lenses to electronic devices. Different devices are needed for different visual tasks.
The use of a visual aid is dependent on the type of vision loss, degree of loss, light and glare needs, ability to handle and operate the aid plus many other factors. A few types of devices are:
- Spectacle-mounted magnifiers
- Hand-held or spectacle-mounted telescopes
- Hand-held and stand magnifiers
- Video magnification
In addition, there are numerous other products to assist those with a vision impairment, such as no-bleed bold pens, writing templates, bump dots, colored filters, large-number phones and clocks, large-type books, magazines, and newspapers, books-on-tape, talking watches, self-threading needles, and more aids to daily living.
Where to obtain specialized visual devices and aids
Many websites and stores sell a variety of magnifying devices and low vision aids, but without a prescription or recommendation from a doctor, you may not experience the optimal benefit from a device. You also may not be able to return or exchange a device. The best place to obtain a low vision aid is from your low vision specialist following a comprehensive low vision examination.
You may purchase some visual aids without an examination but you will most likely not achieve optimal results. Your care should start with a vision rehabilitation evaluation by a doctor of optometry or an ophthalmologist who specializes in vision rehabilitation. The low vision examination is not the same as the retinal or general eye examinations you have experienced.
